Iraq: TSF supporting camp coordination for Mosul crisis

Six months ago, the city of Mosul in Iraq transformed into a violent battleground. To date, over 300,000 people have fled the city and have sought refuge in IDP camps set up in the surrounding region.

The volatile and unpredictable nature of the situation is such that relief agencies require fast and efficient coordination to serve the daily arrivals of families. Communication is the key to this.

TSF has been on the ground since November 2016 providing Wi-Fi alongside the United Nations Emergency Telecommunications Cluster (ETC) in the town of Qayyarah where 20 bodies benefit from TSF's satellite connection for the services provided to the 16,145 families currently housed in the town’s 3 IDP camps.

As the battles continue, new camps are opening regularly to provide shelter for those fleeing their homes. In order to respond to the growing needs, TSF & the ETC have carried out site surveys in Hammam al-Alil and Hasansham and will adapt their telecoms response to the environment and the situation at hand.

Hasansham, a town to the east of Mosul, currently shelters 12,688 families over 3 camps whilst the Hammam al-Alil camp, 25km south of Mosul, currently receives 6,600 people and will have capacity for 30,000 when complete.
