After the 7.6 earthquake that hit the north-western region of Guanacaste in Costa Rica, TSF immediately deployed an emergency team from its regional base of Managua, Nicaragua. This specific location enables TSF to rapidly deploy to any countries of Central America, highly vulnerable to natural disasters - hurricanes, earthquakes, floods…

During this mission, TSF coordinated with the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid department (ECHO) and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

The government reported a total of 1,474 people evacuated and 78 people injured. During the first 12 hours after the quake, landlines, GSM, Internet and electricity networks were interrupted, making rescue operations even more difficult.

TSF thus supported the Costa Rica Red Cross, the Civil Protection units, the CRE (Regional Comities of Emergencies) and CME (Municipal Comities of Emergencies) teams, in the most affected departments of Nicoya and Nandayure.

TSF’s satellite data and voice equipment enabled these entities to rapidly conduct evaluations and efficiently transfer information from the field at a national level.

As the telecom infrastructures were totally reestablished on Saturday 8th of September, TSF has decided to leave Costa Rica the same day.
